A Familiar Morning Routine
Day 66 started the usual way, as it often does for me, with the early morning light filtering through the curtains. I woke up, somewhat groggy but eager to embrace the day ahead, and stepped straight into a cold shower that jolted me awake, invigorating my senses. After getting ready, I hurriedly gathered my belongings and headed to school. On the bus, I took a moment for myself to do my breathing exercises that have become a crucial part of my routine. At this point, I cannot imagine starting a workday without them; they help me calm my mind, clear away the fog of sleep, and prepare me mentally before everything begins to unfold throughout the day.
A Long Day of Exams and Supervision
Most of the day was consumed supervising exams, which is a responsibility I try to take seriously. Due to the special exam schedule that had been put in place, I found myself with far more supervision duties than I was originally supposed to have. Sessions were consecutive, with almost no breaks in between, and it felt relentless. It was exhausting and mentally draining, to say the least. I barely had a moment to sit or rest, and by the end of it all, I could not wait to go home, kick off my shoes, and unwind from the stress of the day.
Before heading back, I utilized a short, unexpected free window to do some grocery shopping. I had arrived early in the morning and, against my usual routine, managed to finish slightly earlier than usual. So it made perfect sense to handle this errand then rather than waiting until late at night after training, when I would be too fatigued to choose anything other than the most convenient options.
Rest and Refueling Before Training
Once home, I took a much-needed nap, allowing the weariness of the day to lift off my shoulders temporarily. After waking up, I prepared and devoured a solid meal. After such a long and demanding day, my body needed proper nutrition to recharge my energy. It was a necessary ritual that helped reset my energy levels before heading out again for another evening of boxing.
I made my way to the boxing session in the evening but sadly arrived a bit late due to missing the bus and navigating through heavy traffic that seemed to conspire against me. Fortunately, the coach still allowed me to join the group. We spoke briefly about weight, competition, and my aspirations in the sport. I explained that I am still new to this, still learning the ropes, and that I am not rushing things. I want to ensure I am confident, healthy, and fully prepared before stepping into any serious competition. There’s still a small injury that lingers, but thankfully it’s fading with each passing day.
Evening Boxing Session
Because I arrived late, unfortunately, I only caught part of the warm-up exercises, which I always look forward to. The session focused on essential skills like rope skipping and shadow boxing, before seamlessly moving into partner work that is always an essential part of our training.
What stood out today was the technical drilling that we engaged in, which was extraordinarily helpful for my development. I partnered up and worked on jab and cross counters, which are critical techniques in boxing. Instead of simply blocking, we practiced the skill of lowering the incoming punch and countering explosively over the top. For example, lowering a left jab with the right hand and simultaneously countering with a left jab was particularly emphasized. We drilled both sides thoroughly and rotated partners to ensure everyone gets the chance to practice these moves effectively.
Later on, we applied the same idea to body shots, Aiming lower and reacting faster. The session concluded with some light sparring, which was controlled and technical, leaving me feeling satisfied and accomplished. I left the gym tired but smiling, knowing I had made progress.
I finished the night with a refreshing cold shower, followed by a quick snack to replenish my energy reserves, and then settled down for a good night’s sleep.
Day Sixty Six Lesson
Some days undeniably test endurance more than motivation, and Day 66 was a clear reminder of that. It reminded me that progress does not always emerge from perfect conditions. Sometimes it emerges from showing up tired, adapting to the circumstances at hand, and still learning something new amidst the chaos. Even after a draining and exhausting day, there is undeniable value in stepping onto the mat or into the ring and sharpening the basics that are essential to becoming a proficient boxer.
Day 66 complete, and I feel motivated to keep pushing forward despite the challenges. The grind continues.
